 The Honourable Tim Fischer AC is the former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia and was the Australian Ambassador to the Holy See for three years until January 2012. A former Australian Army Officer, NSW State Parliamentarian, Leader of the National Party and Minister for Trade, Tim Fischer is also a consultant, company director, author, broadcaster, and multiple patron.

Festival Workshops Announced

Marion Roubos-Bennett, Festival Director, Events and Program Coordinator today released details of the great line up of workshops that will be available to those lucky enough to secure seats. Only 20 places are available at each workshop,

Holders of Platinum Early Bird Tickets will be the first with an opportunity to book these workshops, and for them the Workshops are Free (normally $22).

Chris Andrews is presenting two workshops at the 2016 Festival.
Foundations of story and structure, covering how readers engage with story through character and structure ― without both, a story will fall apart.
Creating Compelling Characters, giving you the essential hands-on toolkit to ensure your readers care about what happens to your characters, even the ones they hate.

Pippa Carron is presenting two workshops

From getting started to getting published, a go-to-whoa workshop will begin with techniques to overcome writers block and describe how to set up essential writing support systems

Self Editing for fiction and non-fiction writing. Your writing will benefit from an in-depth understanding of what it is that editors do.

Rae-LuckieDr Rae Luckie is also presenting a workshop Writing Life Stories – Memories of Place at the Festival. While we focus on character and events in life story writing, place is sometimes neglected. Place is not just a physical location—places are imbued with memories.

What does this mean for you?

Well, Platinum Pass Holders will get preferential seating at each Session, and Priority parking close to the event, a discount on the Literary Lunch. And, they can attend any sessions that are not booked out, whether they have booked or not.

When you book your ticket, an email will be sent to you indicating a promotion code for Platinum discounts on sessions and workshops, and the Literary Lunch. Go back to the website to book your sessions and enter the code at the top of the pop-up page once you have pressed the ‘Tickets’ button. For 2016, the Batemans Bay Writers Festival is offering significantly improved Sponsor and Supporter exposure and facilities on our website.

Typically the site is well used most days, but site visits really take off in the lead up to the BBWF Festival, this year in September. This increased site visitation rate usually starts with the announcements of Authors, Presenters, Sessions and Workshops for the coming Festival. The main announcement this year is on 27 May.

With a large number of locals and visitors planning their festival activities, this site becomes a great place to showcase your services and products. Not all Festival visitors will want to be at all sessions of the Festival, so there are opportunities to promote your business or service on or around Festival time.

We have now added facilities to the site to showcase your organisation, service or product.

We will add categories suitable for your needs (i.e. food, accommodation, entertainment, activity, shopping) so your listing will be easily found. And appropriate listings will feature prominently on relevant pages of the site to help our clients, and you get the most from the festival.

We are offering three levels of sponsorship for your consideration.
  1. $75 for a logo or picture and link displayed on several pages of the web site as a Supporter of the Festival.
  2. Sponsors pay $250 for 250 words, a logo or business card pic and a photo (eg a product photo, a menu, a price list, whatever you need), your address linked to a map, and web link, a contact link, a phone number, all effectively displayed as a web page, and your first photo will be included in a page linked slider image (or random display list of sponsors) together with other festival sponsors, showing in the information section of each page of the festival web site; and
  3. $500 for everything listed in 2 above, plus up to 5 pictures, up to 600 words, featured on the home page slider. No more than 15 of these type 3 sponsorships will be sold, and they will be left in place until at least April 2017. These listings will feature on every page, and on relevant pages also.

Your patronage will help support the non profit festival organisation.

We are also keen to recognise and help sponsors and supporters who can contribute to the Festival in other ways. If you want to propose a special for Festival attendees, a discount or other offer, we would be very happy to hear your proposal.

Getting There

Batemans Bay is four hours drive south from Sydney, two hours drive east from Canberra and two hours drive north from Merimbula.

Refreshments will be available in the Festival Hub marquee
Espresso coffee, cakes and snacks will be available for sale all day Saturday and Sunday morning.
Lunch details will be available closer to the event.

You can also buy a drink from the bar at the Hub. Free tea and coffee is served near the Corrigans Room and Clyde Room each session.

The Coachhouse Marina Resort has a restaurant open for dinner Friday and Saturday from 6 pm and is situated opposite the 27-hole Club Catalina Golf Course which also has a restaurant.

Both are 20 minutes walk from central Batemans Bay and many excellent restaurants.


Adequate parking is available on site at the Coachhouse Marina Resort during the Festival and for the Literary Lunch. Platinum pass holders will get priority parking.

Marion Roubos- Bennett, Festival Director, Events and Program Coordinator

MarionJuneA2013 053Crop Marion has 23 years experience in literary events, book-related lifestyle events and events promoting the State Library of New South Wales’ collections and exhibitions ─ from event concept and management, to promotion and presentation. She also worked writing and editing various event and exhibition related publications for the Library, and provided workshops in book preservation. Marion tutors a monthly course called Art and artists in literature and leads a book discussion group at the University of the Third Age or U3A. Marion holds a Master of Arts (Management) from UTS and a Master of Music from UNSW.


Julie Stuart, Secretary

julieJulie is a retired adult educator and business owner. For over 20 years, Julie held many committee positions for the Business and Professional Women’s organisation in Parramatta. She is a regular volunteer for Sydney Eisteddfod. As a Councillor on the Board of the Friends of the Australian Ballet Julie initiated several successful functions which raised thousands of dollars for the Ballet. Since moving full time to Batemans Bay, after having visited the area for more than 40 years, Julie has become become involved with the South Coast Music Society and the Batemans Bay Writers Festival.

James Henningham, Treasurer

JGHWebJames holds an honours degree in Economics from the University of Sydney and has obtained formal Accounting qualifications. He started his working career on the staff of CSR Ltd. He worked in varying positions including factory accounting, public relations, industrial relations and human resources. After leaving CSR he has worked in a variety of roles, including an administrative role in a tin mining company in Indonesia; ten years in IT as a member of project teams introducing major computer systems for two NSW Government departments; and work for a small consulting company which involved opinion surveys and public consultation at many levels.

Brian HarrisMember
BHWebBrian has also retired to the Eurobodalla region. With his background in  education he is particularly passionate about the inclusion of quality literature into the English curriculum. He has been a Senior Education Officer (Literacy) and also a school principal in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs. He is currently involved in a number of community activities and is on the Eurobodalla Shire Heritage Advisory Committee as well as being the secretary of the Moruya and District Historical Society. Brian maintains the festival’s website and Facebook pages.

Charles Stuart, Member

P1040635Charles Stuart has a 25 year history with Variety – The Children’s Charity. Charles is the driving force behind raising funds for the inclusive playground at Corrigans Beach Reserve, Batemans Bay, being president of the not-for-profit organisation supporting expansion of the playground.

 He is a retired owner of two successful private sector businesses and has had almost 30 years’ experience in the financial industry, having commenced work with the Rural Bank of NSW in 1963, in which he concluded as a senior branch manager in 1992. He is a past Treasurer of Batemans Bay Bushwalking club where he also served a term as Walks Organiser and is currently their auditor. Charles has just retired as Treasurer of the South Coast Music Society, but remains a committee member.

“I spent last weekend at the Batemans Bay Writers Festival and I want to praise the entrepreneurial organisers. In its second year, the festival attracted a small but happy audience of South Coast locals plus some from Canberra and a few from Sydney and Melbourne.

Held on two bright days in a seaside resort with cabins for guests and a central hub for talks and book sales, it felt like Byron Bay Writers’ Festival in its early days 20 years ago – interesting, intimate and relaxed, if less bohemian. Festival Director Marion Roubos-Bennett put together a great program of talks and workshops by 20 writers including Graeme Simsion, James Bradley, Linda Jaivin, Mark Henshaw and Gabrielle Lord, as well as new and local names.

With just two sessions going at once I could see speakers I have missed at bigger festivals and discover others, and have dinner or coffee with them. Authors and audience members had a chance to talk. Roubos-Bennett and her volunteers were well-organised, generous and attentive hosts, and her husband Henk manned the green room, making excellent coffee and soup.

I urge any writer to accept an invitation, book lovers to plan a weekend there, and businesses to support a cultural event that enriches the region.”

Hazel Hall

Hazel HallPoet Hazel Hall is currently Cafe Poet at Biginelli Espresso at the ANU School of Music in Canberra. Along with other poets, Hazel explores the relationship between poetry and music, and liaises with composers and musicians to create and perform new works.
