  • Rod Jones has taught at various institutions in Australia and overseas, including a four-year stint as a writer in residence at La Trobe University.

Rod Jones’ first novel, Julia Paradise, won the fiction award at the 1988 Adelaide Festival, was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award, and was runner-up for the French Literary Prize, Prix Femina Etranger. Julia Paradise has been translated into ten languages and is now available as a Text Classic. His four other novels, Prince of the Lilies, Billy Sunday, Nightpictures, and Swan Bay, have all either won or been shortlisted for major literary awards.

Rod’s most recent novel is The Mothers, a book about secrets. It interweaves the intimate lives of three generations of Australian women who learn that it’s the stories we can’t tell, that continue to shape us and make us who we are.

Caroline Baum calls it a big-hearted novel that spans the twentieth century and combines social history with personal stories. It is a book that will no doubt prompt a great number of conversations about how much things have changed for the better, since the time when mothers were forced to give up their children for adoption under the pressure of the church and the stigma of illegitimacy.
